SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes visited the Kaleidoscope Easter Seals Program in Dublin Monday, June 15. Players in attendance for the Quakes included Ryan Cochrane, Quincy Amarikwa, Jason Hernandez, and Jamil Roberts. After being introduced to the children by Jennifer Cowherd, the Kaleidoscope program leader, Cochrane stepped forward to address the group on behalf of the players.

Cochrane, who recently helped organize the Earthquakes participation in the Walk Now for Autism Bay Area, has a lot of experience with mentally challenged children and was a frequent visitor of Easter Seals growing up because his younger sister is autistic. He spoke to the children about the importance of hard work and perseverance to try to motivate them in school and in life. Next, Hernandez, Amarikwa, and Roberts each took their turn to stress to the students the importance of a healthy diet and active lifestyle.

Following the speeches, the players opened the floor to a short question and answer session followed by soccer skills demonstration. Quincy stepped up first and wowed the crowd with many different tricks including catching the ball on his neck. Hernandez also stepped up to show off some fancy footwork, and soon the guys created a header circle, trying to keep the ball alive as long as they could. After the demonstration, all four of the players got involved with the kids and taught them many different soccer skills ranging from headers to knee juggling.

To conclude the afternoon, each player signed player cards and Earthquakes staff handed out over 150 jersey replica shirts and over 200 tickets, donated by Amway Global, to the students to attend the Earthquakes next home game on June 20 at 1:30 p.m. PT against the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

Easter Seals is a program that provides exceptional services, education, outreach and advocacy so that people living with autism and other disabilities can live, learn, work, and play in our communities. With more than 550 sites in the U.S. alone, Easter Seals has been helping individuals with disabilities and special needs, and their families live better lives for nearly 90 years.

The Earthquakes and Amway Global teamed up to create the Amway Global Kicks for Kids program in 2009. Through the program, Earthquakes players will visit 15 schools or community centers in the Bay Area to discuss the importance of being active and living a healthy lifestyle. The next school visit will take place prior to the Quakes game on June 20 against the LA Galaxy.
