SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes Reserves returned to action Saturday afternoon against the Colorado Rapids Reserves with a 3-1 loss at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes got on the board first, but the Rapids responded with three goals to capture the victory.

The Earthquakes opened the scoring with a Matt Hatzke strike in the opening 15 minutes of the game. Hatzke picked up a pass from Ned Grabavoy on the left side of the penalty box and ripped a shot to the near post. Rapids goalkeeper Preston Burpo dove to his right, but could not make the save.

Colorado answered back in the 25th minute with a strike from Herculez Gomez. Jacob Peterson crossed the ball for Gomez and he found the back of the net.

The Rapids went down a man in the 27th minute. Jose Burciaga Jr. made a hard tackle on Quakes midfielder Luciano Fusco. The referee immediately showed Burciaga Jr. a red card.

Shea Salinas nearly put San Jose back in front early in the second half. He made a nice run past a defender into the box, but his shot from a tight angle was blocked by Burpo.

The Rapids grabbed the lead nine minutes into the second half with Gomez again right in the middle of the action. He fired a shot off the post that bounced directly out to Nico Colaluca. Colaluca knocked the rebound into the far post for a 2-1 Rapids advantage.

The Rapids extended their lead 3-1 in the 65th minute when Gomez shot from the right side past Benton.

Colorado had a number of chances to extend the lead, but the ball found the post three times. The Quakes fall to 1-4-1 in reserve league play, while the Rapids improve to 2-2-2.
