Nickelodeon GAS Will Present "Play of the Year" Award to Celebrate MLS Cup '99 New York, NY -- November 4, 1999 -- Nickelodeon GAS -- Games and Sports for Kids --Nickelodeon's new digital channel, will enhance its partnership with Major League Soccer in honor of the league's championship game, MLS Cup '99, which will be played on Sunday, November 21, at 1:30 p.m. (ET) at Foxboro Stadium, in Foxboro, MA. The announcement was made today by Mark Offitzer, Vice President and General Manager, Nickelodeon GAS. Nickelodeon GAS will debut its signature "Play of the Year" Award at the 1999 MLS Cup Gala Awards Ceremony on November 20, in downtown Boston. The award will be a culmination of MLS' exclusive "Play of the Week" reports that currently air as interstitials on the channel. The 1999 award winner will be chosen exclusively by kids, who will have the chance to vote online on the Nickelodeon GAS website for their favorite play. The online polls will be open from November 5-15. The three MLS Play of the Year finalists for kids to choose from are:
"We are thrilled to extend our relationship with Major League Soccer and to give kids an exclusive voice in determining the 'Play of the Year,'" said Offitzer. "Nickelodeon GAS online is a popular destination for kids and the interactive voting process will bring them one step closer to the excitement of the MLS Cup '99." In addition, Nickelodeon GAS "Play of the Year" footage will run at Foxboro Stadium during halftime of MLS Cup '99, and will be archived on the Nickelodeon GAS website and on the official website of Major League Soccer (www.mlsnet.com). Throughout this past season, the "Play of the Week" spots have aired in MLS stadiums across the country. The channel will also exclusively broadcast the MLS Pro Player Dribble, Pass and Shoot youth skills competition finals. The event will feature 24 soccer players ages 8-14 from around the country competing for the National Championship at MLS Cup. The event coverage will be featured as interstitials in an "All Access GAS" two-hour programming block that is scheduled to air on the channel later in December. Hosted by Dave Aizer, the block will also include the "Play of the Year" Award ceremony segments, as well as soccer-themed kids shows. Major League Soccer is America's Division I professional soccer league and features many top stars from the United States and around the world. The 12 teams currently playing in MLS are: the Chicago Fire, Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D.C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, Miami Fusion, New England Revolution, San Jose Earthquakes and the Tampa Bay Mutiny. Nickelodeon GAS launched March 1, 1999, and features interactive on-air and online programming and a magazine dedicated exclusively to the games and sports that kids love to play.
