New York Takes On LA Galaxy On Saturday

David Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy are in town, and a quick glance at the MLS standings reveals an interesting story: If the Red Bulls were a Western Conference foe of the Galaxy, instead of residing in the top-heavy Eastern Conference, New York would sit one win out of first place. Instead, a series of injuries and unfortunate circumstances has led to a 5-6-5 record (20 pts.).

Welcome Jorge Rojas and Juan Pietravallo. Both midfielders are expected to make an immediate impact to the attacking unit. Furthermore, both are expected to be available for Saturday's match (Rojas is still awaiting receipt of his P1-visa).

The Red Bulls-Galaxy series has been nothing short of pure entertainment. A season ago, 66,237 fans gathered in Giants Stadium to watch New York defeat LA 5-4 behind a game-winning goal from Juan Pablo Angel in the 88th minute. The crowd was the largest to have witnessed an MLS match at Giants Stadium. Earlier this season, the Red Bulls defeated the Galaxy 2-1 at the Home Depot Center. New York will aim to sweep the season series for the first time since 2004.

50,000-plus tickets have been sold for the much-anticipated endeavor as of 4:30 PM Wednesday - for fans hoping to catch not only MLS All-Stars Beckham, Landon Donovan, Juan Pablo Angel and former Red Bull Edson Buddle, but also their new-look Red Bulls.

The Galaxy, who sit a single point out of first place behind Real Salt Lake, are coming off a 1-1 draw with Chivas USA on July 10. Buddle scored his 11th goal of the year (which ties his career-high, in addition to the MLS lead with teammate Donovan) in that match. The Galaxy are winless in their last four, and for the first time in over a month, have dropped out of first place.

For the Red Bulls, Beckham's presence in New York has been overshadowed by Claudio Reyna's retirement from the game of soccer - at least from putting on his boots. At his retirement press conference on Wednesday, in which MLS Commissioner Don Garber was in attendance, such words as "ambassador" and "character" were used to describe what Reyna's presence has meant to U.S. Soccer and the Red Bulls organization. Reyna and the Red Bulls front office are committed to continuing a relationship in which he will be involved in some capacity.

In any case, though, head coach Juan Carlos Osorio is putting the pieces together to field the latest version of the Red Bulls, and on Saturday, barring any unforeseen circumstances, you'll get the chance to see first-hand what Rojas and Pietravallo can do and bring to the field.

Make sure to catch the match live on Fox Soccer Channel, kickoff at 6:30 PM with the 'MLS Pregame Show' at 6 PM.
